Attachment
In an e-mail system, a file, sound annotation, video clip, or other external resource you send along with a text message.

On the Internet, attachments other than plain text files must be encoded into a text format before transmission and then decoded at the receiving end with a matching program in order to preserve compatibility with the existing base of text-only links and text-oriented mail programs. In the last year or two, MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) has become the preferred standard for such encoding and decoding, and most mail programs are now MIME-compatible.
