BinHex
  1. A format for storing Macintosh files on PCs and Unix-based systems. It combines the ordinary data in the file with any resources, such as program code, icons and other information in special formats, and then translates the result into a string of 7-bit characters that can be treated as a text file.

Files in BinHex format are usually indicated with a suffix of .hqx.

  2. A popular Macintosh freeware program for converting files back and forth from BinHex format, written by Yves Lempereur. Although various versions are in circulation, Version 4 is the one needed for decoding the .hqx files posted in most online archives and newsgroups.
