A fanciful name for a "software robot," a program that responds to network requests with a specified set of actions or responses. The most common are "mailbots" that respond to e-mail messages with such actions as providing information about a company or organization. Also common are "listbots," which add or delete requests from mailing lists.
Although similar in ways to agent programs that act on your behalf, bots have a narrower range of actions, generally wait for a direct request before taking an action, and normally are created by someone providing a service over the Net rather than someone seeking one.
