As was the norm for such services, it was run for many years as a proprietary service featuring its own content and discussion groups, with only e-mail connectivity to the rest of the online world. More recently, CompuServe has added an Internet browser and started to redesign its content to a more Web-centric approach. In theory, at least, that makes it one of the largest Internet Service Providers (ISPs), but it appears that only a fraction of the members use very many Internet features yet.
