At its best, crossposting to a few appropriate newsgroups brings an article to the attention of more people who might want to read it. But it's sometimes abused, either to deliberately post to as many newsgroups as possible regardless of content ("spamming") or in an overenthusiastic view of what range of readers might be interested.
