| isr.co.ro : glossary - Cyberspace
- Loosely, the totality of all computer networks and the information that circulates within them. The term was originally coined by William Gibson in his novel "Neuromancer," but it has taken on a life of its own.
As anybody with an electronic banking account can tell you, this space is far from imaginary, and events in cyberspace can have important effects in the "real world." However, because information in cyberspace circulates at nearly the speed of light, and many networks freely cross national boundaries, physical distances and political jurisdictions lose much of their meaning. And as long as typed-in text is the predominent mode of communication on the Net, physical characteristics of the users also fade into insignificance.
