| isr.co.ro : glossary - Finger
- A Unix program that tells you who is currently using the system. A finger program can report the settings and parameters for the account of a particular user and the contents of a special file called a .plan that lets the user post something about him- or herself. If you know only someone's first, last, or account name, a finger program lets you search for the rest of the set, as long as you know the address of the mail server.
The finger program has also been adapted for the Internet to let you issue the command to query remote hosts as well as your own, as in finger clinton@whitehouse.gov. In a set of classic Unix hacks (neat programming tricks), finger has also been set at certain sites to return the status of Net-connected soda machines, the weather, and recent earthquake activity.
