- As applied to the display of Web pages, a region of a page that can be independently filled, scrolled, and changed without affecting the rest of the page. In other contexts, it would be called a window.
Frames are a relatively recent addition pioneered by Netscape Corp. and are not supported yet by all servers and Web browsers.
- As applied to video transmission over the Net, a complete video image. You need about 20 to 30 frames per second to provide what appears to be full motion. Since that's currently more than you can get with most Internet connections, most Net-based video systems are either limited to in-house "intranet" systems with direct connections or to low frame rates that look more like a series of strobe pictures.
- In computerized instruction, it used to mean material shown at one time on the screen. But with greater use of animation and interactive screens, the term is now also used to mean a logical sequence of images treated as a unit in the instructional design.
- In data transmission based on "packet" technology, in which data is sent in chunks surrounded with address and error-checking information, a packet with the complete set of control and address information.
- In serial data communication, such as you might use on a "dialup" connection to the Internet, a single character made up of "data bits" plus any start-and-stop control bits. If the receiving end of the system doesn't get the number of bits it expects in each frame, you get an error message reporting a "framing error."
