Home Directory
In Unix and other multiuser computer systems, the location in the file system used as a default for your file operations unless you specify a change for a particular session.

If you're accessing the Net through a "shell account," this is where you start off--and where you return if you issue a plain "cd" (change directory) command without parameters. Most of the parameter and resource files for your Net programs, including "newsreaders" and mail programs, are stored in this directory or its subdirectories.

Your home directory is set by the system administrator, and you can't normally change it.
