isr.co.ro : glossary HTTPd (HyperText Transfer Protocol Daemon) A freeware Web-server program widely used in both the original version, produced by the NCSA (National Center for Supercomputer Applications) at the University of Illinois, and in various versions for other systems, including Windows. It gets its name because it is a daemon (a program that runs in the background answering requests automatically) that implements the HyperText Transport Protocol (the standard way Web servers communicate with Web browser programs).
