| isr.co.ro : glossary - Internet Address
- In technical contexts, the 32-bit numeric value that specifies a particular "host" machine on the Internet or on an internal network using Internet Protocol addressing. It's usually written out in "dotted decimal notation" as four sets of numbers from 0 to 255 separated by periods, such as "127.1.2.3."
- In the context of sending e-mail or contacting a particular person or organization, the combination of username and "fully qualified domain name" (the name of a host computer with all parts up to the top-level domain), as in "glossary@netcom.com."
In the actual transmission process, the domain portion of this type of address is actually translated to a numeric address by a Domain Name Server. But using a symbolic name lets you work with a more easily remembered word or phrase, and you can change the actual physical address of a service or organization while keeping the same symbolic name.
