ISP (Internet Service Provider)
a company that sells access to the Internet, and possibly software, consulting, and troubleshooting help as well. Some tailor their services for residential customers, others deal only with businesses, and some serve both groups.

A few larger ISP firms exchange messages with other large firms at peering points. Smaller firms generally buy a fixed amount of service (pipe capacity), using a high-speed link from a larger firm. These smaller firms then figure out how many users they can support, considering that dial-up users won't all be online at any given time and that even users with full-time, dedicated connections probably won't saturate their link all the time.
