mail exchange (MX)
in the Internet's Domain Name System (DNS), used to translate the symbolic names people use for Net addresses to the numerical values used by the machines. More specifically, a database entry that says a particular machine accepts mail for a particular symbolic address.

Your Internet Service Provider or technical support department has to set up one of these records if you want to get mail under a custom domain name, that is, under a domain name that isn't directly tied to a particular host computer on the Net.
