This format provides a compact method for specifying musical notes, but it does not provide a means for specifying speech, sound effects, or other recorded sounds. Consequently, it's most often used to supply background music on Web pages and for exchanging melodies in certain Usenet newsgroups. Most Web browsers support MIDI file playback, either with direct built-in code or through use of optional plugins (separate program opened automatically by the browser).
