MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface)
  1. An industry-standard digital connection among musical instruments, computers, and other control and recording devices. MIDI provides a way to digitally record, play back, and synchronize the settings needed to control sound-producing devices.

  2. A format for music files, built around strings of MIDI messages that can be sent to a sound card, built-in sound system, or external MIDI device for translation back into musical notes and rhythms.

Because a relatively small MIDI file can provide a long period of music, such files are used on some Web pages to provide background music. But since MIDI capability varies depending on the hardware features of your computer, the necessary drivers (interface software) aren't included in most Web browser programs, and you'll have to add a suitable plug-in before you hear MIDI files.
