- As a suffix on an Internet Web address, a location under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Defense. The total collection of these addresses is sometimes called the mil domain or mil hierarchy.
Military addresses and domain names are managed by a separate U.S. Department of Defense NIC (Network Information Center) at nic@nic.ddn.mil. As you might expect, some services are public, while others are restricted to authorized users only. Incidentally, most such addresses point to computers that contain administrative and academic information. At least according to the Defense Department, even if you manage to log on to a military Internet site, you're not likely to stumble onto classified informatio For historical reasons, addressing by organizational type is standard in the United States. In other countries, the standard suffix can be a country code even for military users. The equivalent to mil in Romania is "mil.ro" - the generic top level domain for the mil-itary in Ro-mania, supplied by RomNIC.
