A set of standards for including non-text elements in Internet mail messages. The current versions of most Internet-based mail programs are "MIME-compliant" and can create and read messages in this format. Typically, a MIME-format message might include an initial text section for display with your normal mail routines, plus one or more multimedia elements, such as audio clips, or binary files, such as program code.
According to the MIME standard, your mail reader program should offer to extract and save any such added elements for use with other programs. Your mail reader may also act as a viewer for certain of the more common multimedia "MIME types." If you add an attachment to an outgoing e-mail message, your mail program includes in the message an appropriate MIME "part."
