| isr.co.ro : glossary - MUD (Multi-User Dungeon/Dimension)
- A computer-mediated interactive virtual environment that allows multiple users to interact by typing in stylized messages and commands. Most MUDs run on large computers at universities, with users logging in directly or via the Internet. Each MUD world is set in motion and managed by a self-appointed wizard, usually as something between a social service and a personal obsession.
The original MUDs grew out of text-based computer quest/adventure games and featured combat between the players. More recent variations have added an emphasis on social interaction, and many now include graphics. Some types, such as MOOs, also allow ordinary players to add their own rooms and other constructs to the regular pre-set rooms, characters, objects, and rules that make up a standard MUD world.
