Netscape Extensions
In reference to the HyperText Markup Language (HTML) used to specify the content and appearance of pages on the World Wide Web service, markup tags and rules that were proposed and implemented by Netscape Communications Corp. without waiting for approval from the industry committee in charge of the HTML standard. So far, most but not all have been adopted as part of the official standard. Among features that first showed up in this fashion are tables, style sheets, and frames.

Because Netscape controls much of the browser market, in practice it can add an extension to HTML simply by including the feature in a new release of the Netscape Navigator browser. Once a feature becomes available, if page authors start to use it, makers of many other browsers find they have little choice but to add it as well.
