- A program for reading the Internet's Usenet newsgroups (also called "netnews"). Most let you choose which newsgroups to examine, whether to read all active articles in each subject or just ones that you haven't previously seen, to read articles and replies in the order they came in or to read by "threads" (articles followed directly by their replies), to save or print received items, and to create and post new articles or replies.
Some newsreaders work as the local "client," providing display and human, interface functions in conjunction with a "news server" that supplies the data. Some run directly on an Internet host machine, with a "shell" interface that lets a desktop computer communicate as if it were a UNIX terminal connected to the host. And some are set up as "offline" readers which download messages from a server in bulk and then let you read individual items at your leisure.
